Dr. Selene Burke joined Refocus Group in 2006 and currently serves as Vice President of Clinical Affairs. She is a glaucoma-certified optometrist with extensive clinical experience in multispecialty practices. Since joining Refocus Group, Dr. Burke has managed the organization, training, and execution of all domestic and international clinical trials. She works alongside optometrists and ophthalmologists from around the world in implementing the VisAbility™ Procedure into their practices.

Dr. Burke began her optometric career at Vision Wellness and Laser Center in Richardson, Texas, where she provided comprehensive pre- and postoperative patient care to refractive and cataract patients while playing a significant role in establishing the practice’s first on-site laser center. During Dr. Burke’s tenure, she was also an authority on specialty contact lenses with special interests in the treatment and management of patients with irregular corneas and ocular disease. In 2004, Dr. Burke joined Vision Quest Eye Care and Surgery Center in Dallas, Texas, where she provided pre- and postoperative care to refractive, cataract, glaucoma, and retinal surgery patients. She also developed and implemented clinical protocols for ophthalmic examination, medical assisting, and insurance coding, while providing direct supervision, instruction, and training to the ophthalmic staff.

Dr. Burke received her OD from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee, has an MS in Zoology from Auburn University, and has a BS in Biology from Rust College.

Dr. David Schanzlin assumed the role of Chief Medical Officer for Refocus Group in February 2012. With 30 years of hands-on experience as a refractive surgeon, Dr. Schanzlin has been instrumental in guiding Refocus’ clinical affairs.

Previously, Dr. Schanzlin was at the Shiley Eye Center at the University of California at San Diego. He also led the Department of Ophthalmology at St. Louis University as department professor and chairman until 1996. In his more than 30 years as a refractive surgeon, Dr. Schanzlin has helped develop many new technologies, including INTACS (for which he was Chief Medical Officer) and the excimer and femtosecond lasers used in LASIK eye surgery. He has dedicated his career to developing various surgical corrections for nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, and is internationally renowned as an educator and speaker.

Dr. Schanzlin received his MD from the University of Chicago, where he also completed his residency and was Chief Resident in Ophthalmology. Additionally, he completed fellowships at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of California at San Francisco with subspecialties in cornea and external diseases.

Dr. Barrie Soloway has been the Medical Director for Refocus Group since 2003. He is also currently the Director and Principal Investigator for research at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary’s Vision Correction Center. He has a prestigious medical background and vast experience in refractive surgery and ophthalmology that gives him unique insights as Medical Director for Refocus.

Throughout his career, Dr. Soloway has been at the forefront of vision correction research, as demonstrated by his work with Alcon’s LADARVision^® system, automated lamellar therapeutic keratoplasty (ALTK) for treating flap complications, and the advancement of surface excimer surgery with automated Epi-K ELASIK. Dr. Soloway has authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and surgeon textbook chapters on vision correction methods, and he serves as an editor for the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Because of his expertise, he is frequently an invited speaker at ophthalmology conferences all over the world.

Dr. Soloway is a fellow of both the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons. He received his MD at Pennsylvania State University and completed his ophthalmology training at Long Island College Hospital and the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. He graduated cum laude with a BA from New York University.

Dr. Mark Packer joined Refocus Group as Medical Monitor in 2013. He has served as Principal Investigator or Medical Monitor in more than 50 clinical trial protocols leading to FDA approvals and is recognized internationally as a leader in cataract and refractive lens surgery.

During his career, Dr. Packer has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications, edited textbooks on cataract and refractive lens surgery, and served as editor for the annual Cataract and IOL issue of Current Opinion in Ophthalmology. His research has led to groundbreaking technologies, including aspheric intraocular lenses, intraoperative wavefront measurement, and multifocal lenses for refractive lens exchange. For 14 years, Dr. Packer has been the Clinical Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Oregon Health & Sciences University. He has also served as Chairman of the Cataract Clinical Committee of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and was chosen by the American Academy of Ophthalmology to author the current Preferred Practice Pattern for Cataract.

Dr. Packer received his MD from the University of California, Davis. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and his residency in ophthalmology at Boston University School of Medicine.
